HSA attends Fair Work’s Hair Stylists’ Penalty Rates hearing

August 28, 2019

On Monday, August 26, HSA members, ambassadors, and other hairstylists took to the street outside the Fair Work Commission to protest the penalty rate hearing.
It was a big step for the HSA, our first public event as a union, and we had a fantastic turnout. We also had support from the ETU, the SDA, Unions NSW, and the ACTU. It was great to see unions come together to support hair stylists and their rights! šŸ’Ŗ
Labor’ss Sydney MP Tanya Plibersek, ACTU President Michele O’Neil, Unions NSW Secretary Mark Morey, AWU National Secretary Dan Walton, Monica Rose from the SDA, and our very own HSA ambassador Vanessa Watts all spoke in support of protecting hairstylists’ penalty rates. Their speeches were covered by 2GB Radio, Channel 9, and ABC News, so our word got out to the public!
See below a livestream of the event, kindly provided by Australian Unions:

Thank you to everyone who came along and supported us on the day. The hearing is scheduled to run from Monday 26 to Thursday 29 August, and we expect a result from the Fair Work Commission in the next four to six months. We will keep our news section and Facebook page up to date with the latest developments, so watch this space!
While Fair Work deliberates, we’re going to keep fighting. If you haven’t already,Ā sign the petition to protect our penalty ratesĀ and pledge your support to our campaign.
The HSA relies on the support of hair stylists across Australia. Without members, our team of legal experts and organisers won’t have the resources to continue their fantastic work, whether it’s campaigning to save our penalty rates, resolving disputes with stolen wages and entitlements, or helping hair stylists with workplace bullying and harassment.
We’re open for qualified hair stylists, apprentices, salon owners, and everything in between! Join your union today, and get ready to shake up the hair industry for the better.
