Did you know that 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime?
As a trade and industry that’s dominated by women, we are disproportionately affected by breast cancer. Many of us have sisters, mothers, aunts, friends and co-workers who are among the 20,000 Australians diagnosed with breast cancer each year.
That’s why this June, HSA is supporting the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s campaign to GO PINK. Our team of members, ambassadors and officials have pledged to WEAR IT, SHAVE IT and COLOUR IT to raise funds for live-saving research into early detection and preventative treatments for breast cancer.
There are also a growing number of studies that show a strong link between exposure to permanent hair colours and treatments, and an increased risk of breast cancer.
These studies do not take hair stylists into account, and do not consider the exposure that we experience every day as part of our job. As part of the campaign, we are urging all hair stylists to protect themselves with PPE and do what they can to limit their exposure to hair colours and treatments, with gloves, masks, and well-ventilated salons.
As well as our event fundraising, for every member that signs up to Hair Stylists Australia in June, we will donate their first month’s membership fees to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
So if you’ve been on the fence about joining HSA, now is the perfect time to become a member, and #joinforgood. You’ll be helping the industry and raising funds to help the National Breast Cancer Foundation get closer to their goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030.
